Where are they?
The Biceps Muscle is officially known as the "biceps brachii" because it is one muscle that breaks into 2 heads. It attaches at the top of the forearm just below the elbow and starts in two spots on the front of the scapula.
What do they do?
The main action of the biceps is to flex or bend the lower arm. It is a very important muscle in using the arm to lift as in doing a curl with a dumbbell. It also contributes in a small way to palm-up rotation of the lower arm and flexion of the shoulder.
What makes them hurt?
Some common reasons the biceps hurt is overuse or trauma which can lead to biceps tendonitis or a muscle tear. Additionally, the muscle can also strain if something too heavy is lifted.
How can massage help?
Massage techniques like deep tissue, myofascial release, or trigger point therapy can help relax tight biceps muscles and release knots, reducing pain and stiffness, as well as breaking up scar tissue and adhesions following an injury. Massage also increases circulation which can help flush out lactic acid after heavy usage and also reduce any inflammation which may contribute to stiffness and pain.
What can I do besides massage to help them?
Gentle exercise can keep the biceps muscles strong and flexible so that there is less chance of injury. If they do hurt, heat treatments, stretching, and self massage can help keep the muscle soft and keep it healing and working properly.
